Nominating an occupation
To apply, you must nominate one occupation for the skills assessment. It is important that you choose only one occupation for each application. You will need to pay the full assessment fee for each occupation.
Requirements for each group
All VETASSESS occupations have been coded as A, B, C, D or E. Occupations are classified by groups according to their requirements. Please note DIAC has introduced a new SOL effective from the 1st of July 2011.
Group A
Group A Occupations require a qualification which is at least at the level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree, in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation. In addition to this, the applicant must have at least one year of post-qualification employment in a field which is highly relevant and at an appropriate skill level to your nominated occupation completed in the five years before the date of application for a Skills Assessment.
Employment needs to be undertaken after completion of the highly relevant qualification. Pre-qualification employment cannot be considered for Group A.
Group B
Group B Occupations require a qualification which is assessed as at least at the level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree, in a highly relevant field to the nominated occupation. In addition to this, the applicant must have at least one year of post-qualification employment in a field which is highly relevant and at an appropriate skill level to your nominated occupation completed in the five years before the date of application for a Skills Assessment. Pre-qualification employment may be considered.
If your qualification is not in a highly relevant field, additional years of employment will be required. Please see Group B below for details.

Group C
Group C Occupations require a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of at least an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma, in a highly relevant field to the nominated occupation. In addition to this, the applicant must have at least one year of post-qualification employment in a field which is highly relevant and at an appropriate skill level to your nominated occupation completed in the five years before the date of application for a Skills Assessment. Pre-qualification employment may be considered.

If your qualification is not in a highly relevant field to the nominated occupation, two years of highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level will be required. Please see Group C below for details.
Group D
Group D Occupations require a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Certificate III or IV, in a highly relevant field to the nominated occupation, and post-qualification employment as follows:
Applicants with a qualification assessed at AQF Certificate IV level in a highly relevant field must also have at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level to their nominated occupation completed in the five years before the date of application for a Skills Assessment. Two years of such employment is required if the qualification/s has a shortfall in content relevance.
Applicants with a qualification assessed at AQF Certificate III level in a highly relevant field must also have three years of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level to their nominated occupation. No additional years of employment will compensate for a lack of a highly relevant major.

Group E
Group E Occupations require a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of at least an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma, in a highly relevant field to the nominated occupation. In addition to this, the applicant must have at least one year of employment in a field which is highly relevant and at an appropriate skill level to your nominated occupation completed in the five years before the date of application for a Skills Assessment.
Employment needs to be undertaken after completion of the highly relevant qualification at the required educational level. Pre-qualification employment cannot be considered for Group E occupations.

Additional years of employment cannot compensate for the lack of relevant qualifications. The occupation of Medical Administrator describes someone who plans, organises, directs, controls and coordinates medical programs and clinical services in a hospital or other health service facility, maintains standards of medical care, provides leadership to ensure an appropriately skilled medical workforce, and contributes to health service planning (ANSZCO). The role of Medical Administrator is usually the most senior medical management position in a hospital or hospital department. They may also be known by other titles such as Medical Manager, Director of Clinical Services, and Director of Medical Services. Medical administration is administration or management utilising the medical and clinical knowledge, skill, and judgement of a registered medical practitioner, and capable of affecting the health and safety of the public or any person (RACMA). A highly relevant field of study is Medicine. In addition, Medical Administrators may hold higher qualifications in Health Administration and Public Health. Please note that this occupation is at a higher skill level and tasks are different to practicing physicians, medical officers, nursing managers, interns, administrative hospital staff and non-hospital practice managers. Other managers in health care settings may better fit under other occupations not assessed by VETASSESS and therefore would not be assessed positively for this occupation. These other occupations include 134213 Primary Health Organisation Manager, which covers out-of-hospital health services, and 134299 Health and Welfare Services Managers nec, which includes Directors of Health Professional Services not elsewhere classified. Qualifications in Nursing or allied health fields such as Homeopathy, would not usually meet the requirements for this occupation. |

Other majors in social science may be considered on a case by case basis. |

It includes the design of parks and gardens integrated with the built environment (ASCED). Degrees in Architectural studies without a major in Landscape Architecture will not be assessed positively, unless the applicant has official registration as a Landscape Architect. Employment undertaking full time employment in highly relevant tasks as a Landscape Architect is required. Registration as a Landscape Architect will be highly regarded. |

A Chemist studies the chemical and physical properties of substances, and develops and monitors chemical processes and production (ANZSCO). Chemistry (or Chemical Sciences) is the study of the composition, structure, chemical reactions and transformations of matter (ASCED).
A major in Chemistry would include subjects such as analytical, physical, organic and inorganic chemistry with an additional focus on modern applications such as nanotechnology, analytical and environmental chemistry, polymer science and surface science. Qualifications in Food Science or Food Technology do not usually have the breadth and depth of Chemistry related subjects to be considered positive for this occupation. Applicants should consider the occupation of 234212 Food Technologist instead. This occupation should not be confused with 251512 Industrial Pharmacists, who undertake research, testing and analysis related to the development, production, storage, quality control and distribution of drugs and related supplies. |

A highly relevant field of study is Occupational Health and Safety which is the study of recognising, evaluating and controlling environmental factors associated with the interaction of individuals and the workplace (ASCED definition). Qualifications which do not have a major in OH&S will be considered on a case by case basis provided that the employment is assessed as highly relevant to the nominated occupation. For example, a qualification in building and construction, as well as short courses and/or licensing in OH&S combined with employment in a construction setting, primarily in a full time OH&S role. |
