Preparing for the test

Test components

The test has three components:

Test 1 – Literacy

30 minute test containing 40 multiple-choice questions that assess the ability to work with words, sentences and other written text. This test covers the use of the English language, including:

Punctuation
Comprehension
Grammar and sentence structure
Spelling
The meaning of words
The purpose of a text and who it is for

Test 2 – Numeracy

30 minute test containing 40 multiple-choice questions that assess the ability to work with numbers and to solve arithmetic problems. This test covers:

Numbers and calculations - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
Fractions, decimals and percentages
Shape and space - calculate and compare areas and dimensions
Measurement - basic metric measurements and quantities, metric conversions
Reasoning – use information to solve a mathematical problem, estimates, patterns
Data and statistics – read and interpret graphs, collect data
Location and direction – follow directions, read maps, use simple coordinates and symbols

A calculator is not permitted.

Test 3 - English Writing Skills

45 minute test requiring candidates to write responses to sets of questions or topics. There are 3 different types of writing tasks. Responses will be assessed according to the following criteria:

Showing an understanding of the text and the requirements of the task
Using correct English: punctuation, grammar and spelling
Using language appropriate to the task
Organising your thoughts and ideas into sentences and paragraphs
Using a style of writing appropriate to the purpose and audience

on the menu bar down the left-hand side of the screen, go to the list of 'Other Resources'
click on the link for 'Candidate Preparation Kits'
on the new page, click on the link for 'VETASSESS Test'
enter the quantity of Candidate Preparation Kits you wish to purchase
click on the 'Buy' button
when purchasing is complete, click on the 'Checkout' button
complete the order and payment steps
the Candidate Preparation Kit will be sent to you within 5 days of payment
