The 457 Skills Assessment Program is an assessment pathway for applicants applying for a Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457).

Offshore Skills Assessment Program is assessment pathway for applicants applying for skilled migration visa to Australia who work in a nominated occupation and who hold a passport from a nominated country.

The Optional Service is a skills assessment pathway for applicants trained in trades overseas and who are not required to have a skills assessment, as part of a migration requirement. Applicants are generally seeking a skills assessment for the purpose of gaining an occupational license in a nominated occupation and be able to travel to a nominated country for an assessment.
Successful skills assessments under the Optional Service may also be used for migration purposes where required, for example for permanent migration from eligible countries. For more information, please visit Trades Recognition Australia.

Pathway 1 - You don't have an Australian qualification

Read the Guides and Factsheets for your occupation. Complete the necessary forms and supply your training and employment documents.

 If your skills assessment is conducted in Australia, you will need to apply for a Unique Student Identifier (USI). Go to www.usi.gov.au and apply online.  You must include your USI on your application form.  

  1. In Stage 1 we will review your training and employment evidence to determine whether you meet Australian trade requirements. Your evidence must show you have at least 5 years' experience in your occupation at the skill level required. This may include time spent in training. Your evidence must show you have worked in your occupation in the last 3 years and must be able to be verified.
  2. If you're successful, an assessor will assess you via a technical interview or a practical assessment. Technical interview or practical assessment will be conducted in English and no interpreters are allowed. You must have a practical assessment if you're applying for a licensed trade, e.g. electrician, plumber or air-conditioning refrigeration mechanic.

If your assessment is successful, you will receive:

If you're unsuccessful, you will receive:

  • a Skills Assessment outcome letter
  • a Statement of Attainment (non-licensed trades)
  • advice on further training or employment experience required.

If you are unsuccessful and:

  • want to know why, you may apply to have your assessment decision reviewed
  • 12 months have not yet passed, you can apply to be reassessed
  • you have a grievance regarding the assessment process or fairness in the way you were treated, you can appeal the decision.

​Please note, if you do not apply to be reassessed within 12 months of receiving your unsuccessful outcome, you will have to submit a new application rather than applying for a reassessment.

Pathway 2 - You do have an Australian qualification or a current Australian Occupational Licence

Complete your application form, You must also provide:

  • a copy of your Australian qualification, including a Statement of Results or your current Australian occupational licence. To decide if you can apply, please refer to Pathway 2 Australian Qualification (76.4KB pdf)
  • evidence you have worked full time in paid employment in your occupation for a total of 3 years, i.e. taxation records, annual payment summaries, group certificates, pay slips and/or bank statements. This may include equivalent part-time work, and
  • evidence you have worked full time in your occupation for 12 months in the last 3 years; for applicants applying with a current Australian occupational licence this 12 months employment must be in Australia.

  1. An assessor will check that:
    • your qualification meets the Australian certificate requirements, or your licence is current and valid for your occupation
    • you meet the employment requirements.
  2. If successful, you'll be invited to attend a technical interview. Technical interview will be conducted in English and no interpreters are allowed. An assessor will assess you via an online or face-to-face interview.

You will be issued with a successful Skills Assessment outcome letter.

  • 12 months have not yet passed, you can apply to be reassessed
