Connecting skilled Indian hospitality workers with Australian industry

VETASSESS has signed a memorandum of understanding with Tourism Training Australia (TTA) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to create a streamlined skilled migration pathway to connect Australian employers with skilled hospitality workers from India.

VETASSESS has signed a memorandum of understanding with Tourism Training Australia (TTA) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to create a streamlined skilled migration pathway to connect Australian employers with skilled hospitality workers from India.

VETASSESS would be the assessing authority and would handle inquiries, assessment facilities, and communications to assess the skills and employment experience of Indians applying to work in Australia’s hospitality industry.

Tourism Training Australia would provide a job portal to connect employers with workers, and the CII would supply hospitality workers in India and provide the onboarding and processing to assist skilled workers to apply for a visa.

Providing confidence to employers

Australia has a chronic shortage of skilled hospitality workers nationally.

VETASSESS Executive Director Rob Thomason said VETASSESS could assess and verify applicants’ qualifications and employment experience to provide assurance that they had the skills required by Australian employers.

This would also give Indian workers confidence that their skills would be recognised in Australia.

TTA Chairman John Hart said it could be difficult for Australian employers to understand an applicant’s suitability for a role because they could not gauge the standard of an employer in India, unless the applicant worked at one of the top hotels.

“This pathway will give validation and be a form of safety net for employers,” he said.

Mr Hart said the greatest shortages in Australia’s hospitality and tourism industry are in supervisor and junior management roles, and for cooks and chefs.

COVID lockdowns had disrupted the hospitality training industry, with student enrolments dropping from 20,000 to 2,000 during those years, resulting in few graduates finishing their courses now.

India is a source of labour in tourism and hospitality globally and Mr Hart said hospitality workers would be attracted to Australia to gain international experience.

“We have an industry that is world renowned for the quality and experience we offer,” he said.

“We attract very high-quality international visitors and the domestic traveller has high expectations, so they are working in an industry regarded as one of the highest quality markets in tourism and hospitality.”
