Health Promotion Officer is a VETASSESS Group A occupation

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher, in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation. Applicants must also have at least one year of highly relevant, post-qualification employment, at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years.

Applicants will not meet the required skill level if:

  • The qualification(s) are not at the required educational level
  • The qualification(s) are not in a highly relevant field of study
  • The employment has been completed prior to the completion of the qualification. 

A positive assessment of both qualifications and employment is required for a positive Skills Assessment outcome.

 

Group A

** Highly relevant paid employment duration (20 hours or more per week): 

One year of post-qualification paid employment (20 hours or more per week) highly relevant to the nominated occupation, at an appropriate skill level in the last five years before the date of application for a Skills Assessment.

Qualification and Employment Criteria

AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree

This includes qualifications assessed at AQF Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level.

A major in medicine or health science may be considered on a case-by-case basis taking into account the subjects undertaken and relevance of post qualification employment. Subjects would include Public Health, Health Policy, Environmental Health, Health Data Science, Social Health, Communicable Diseases, Cultural Health Policies, Epidemiology, Health Education and Promotion.

Highly relevant major fields of study include:

  • Health Promotion
  • Public Health

Employment

Highly relevant tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing communication objectives in relation to health issues.
  • Identifying the audience most at need or risk and establishing the most appropriate method to reach that audience.
  • Preparing publicity and/or presentations on health issues.
  • Writing material to assist in the promotion of health issues.
  • Giving presentations to community groups on health issues to increase public awareness.
  • Setting up displays on health issues.

Additional tasks may include:

  • Assisting community groups in the planing, developing, maintaining and evaluating of community resources, programs and support networks.
  • Researching, analysing and assisting council, town planning, corporate planning and environmental health departments to develop community service policies.
  • Carrying out administrative work, which may include written correspondence, preparing submissions and reports for government bodies or other agencies and attending management meetings.
  • Raising awareness of healthy lifestyles, disease and disability, and other health-related issues.

Employment Information

Generally the Health Promotion Officer assists health and community groups to improve the health of individuals and the community. Health Promotion Officers are often employed in local, state and federal government, not-for-profit organisations, health agencies and community services institutes

  • An Asthma Educator offers education and support about asthma to both adults and children. This includes support around understanding asthma, what causes asthma or makes it worse, how to use medications and what to do in an emergency.
  • A Diabetes Educator specialises in providing diabetes self-management education for people with diabetes. This includes explaining diabetes and providing individualised advice on how to get blood glucose levels within the appropriate target range, and organising tests and screenings for diabetes complications.
  • A Childbirth educator offers evidence-based, unbiased information about the physiology of birth to expectant parents. The primary objective of the Childbirth Educator is to equip families with the knowledge and skills to evaluate all their options as pregnancy and labor progress, and how to find their voice in the decision-making process.
