Skills assessments for horticulture migrant workers

May 2022 – VETASSESS is conducting assessments of horticultural workers’ skills under the Australian Government’s Horticulture Industry Labour Agreement (HILA) program.

The HILA program aims to increase employers’ access to skilled and semi-skilled migrant workers for the horticulture industry, where appropriately qualified Australians are unavailable.

Employers will be able to sponsor overseas workers in some categories of Temporary Skill Shortage visas and some categories of permanent residency.

VETASSESS has the authority to conduct assessments for migration purposes for 16 occupational categories under the agreement, listed here, including cold storage managers, irrigationists and growers and farm managers.

VETASSESS Executive Director Rob Thomason says employers in some rural areas face ongoing shortages of skilled and experienced workers, which can affect their ability to grow food and get their produce to markets.

“Horticulture accounts for 17 per cent of the value of all rural production in Australia and horticultural exports have risen by 69 per cent over the last 20 years,” he said.

“Export demand for horticultural products is forecast to continue growing and producers will need skilled workers to increase production.”
