In our recent DAMA Skills Assessment Webinar, our subject matter experts addressed a wide range of questions from migration agents and applicants about qualifications, work experience, processing timeframes, and evidence requirements under the Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA).
To help you navigate your next steps with confidence, we’ve summarised some of the most frequently asked questions from the live Q&A session, along with clear explanations from our assessment team.
1. Is additional work experience required on top of the skills assessment requirement for the 482 (SID) visa?
No. For the Skills in Demand (SID/482) visa, the same period of employment can be used concurrently to meet both the skills assessment requirement and the visa requirement.
For example, if the occupation requires one year of employment for skills assessment, that same one year can also be used to meet the SID visa requirement. However, this differs for other visa programs. For instance, the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) may require additional employment on top of the skills assessment requirement, meaning two years in total.
2. Do you accept casual or part‑time employment for DAMA skills assessments?
Yes. Casual and part‑time employment is accepted, provided it meets the minimum threshold of 20 hours per week.
Where employment is less than full‑time (38 hours per week), VETASSESS applies a pro‑rata calculation. For example, if an occupation requires one year of full‑time employment, this would equate to two years at 20 hours per week.
3. How is work experience measured and verified?
VETASSESS relies on the employment evidence provided by the applicant, such as statements of service and supporting documents. In certain scenarios, VETASSESS may conduct a technical interview with the applicant or contact the nominated referee to clarify the tasks outlined in the Statement of Service.
VETASSESS considers both full-time and pro rata employment in its DAMA assessments. Full-time employment is defined as 38 hours per week, while pro rata employment must be a minimum of 20 hours per week to be considered.
4. Can short periods of employment be combined to meet the work experience requirement?
Yes. Multiple periods of employment can be combined, provided they:
- Total the required duration (for example, one year)
- Meet the required hours (38 hours per week for full‑time, or pro‑rata equivalent)
However, very short periods of work (such as one month) on their own are not sufficient to meet minimum requirements.
5. Are qualifications obtained through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) accepted?
Yes. RPL qualifications are accepted, as long as:
- The qualification has been fully completed
- A certificate and transcript have been issued
VETASSESS may request additional evidence to verify the authenticity of these qualifications, to ensure the qualification and provider are appropriately registered with the relevant authorities.
Incomplete or in‑progress RPL qualifications cannot be used for assessment.
6. Does work experience need to be gained after completing a qualification?
No. For DAMA skills assessments, work experience can be gained before, during, or after completing a qualification.
This differs from some full skills assessment pathways, which may require post‑qualification employment. DAMA requirements are generally more flexible.
7. Can the same work experience used for RPL also be used to meet visa requirements?
Yes. If your qualification was obtained through RPL based on work experience, that same employment may also be used to meet the visa work experience requirement for DAMA assessment purposes, provided it aligns with the nominated occupation and meets the required hours and duration.
8. Are high school (Year 12) qualifications equivalent to a Certificate II?
No. Secondary education (Year 12) is not part of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and cannot be used to meet a Certificate II requirement.
However, some DAMA occupations only require secondary education, in which case Year 12 may be acceptable.
9. What is the typical processing time for a DAMA skills assessment?
The standard processing time is two to three weeks and may be shorter if all required documentation is provided and the application is decision-ready. DAMA assessments are generally completed more quickly than full skills assessments.
10. Are concessions or exemptions available under DAMA?
VETASSESS does not grant concessions. Any concessions or exemptions under DAMA are determined by the Designated Area Representative (DAR) for the relevant region. VETASSESS is responsible solely for conducting the skills assessment component of the DAMA process
11. Is a skills assessment mandatory for DAMA employer sponsorship?
This depends on the requirements set by the Designated Area Representative. While most DAMA occupations assessed by VETASSESS do require a skills assessment, confirmation should be sought directly from the DAR for the specific region.
12. Can self‑employment be assessed under DAMA?
Yes. Applicants may have both self‑employed and employed work experience, but these must be evidenced and assessed as separate periods of employment, with appropriate documentation for each.
13. What if my overseas employer has closed and cannot provide a statement of service?
If an employer is no longer operating, alternative evidence may be accepted, including:
- Employment contracts or promotion letters
- Bank statements or taxation records
- Statutory declarations outlining duties performed
All evidence must clearly demonstrate position, duties, hours, and duration.
