Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker is a VETASSESS Group C occupation

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma or higher, in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.

In addition to this, applicants must have at least one year of post-qualification employment at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years in a field which is highly relevant to the nominated occupation. If employment is not post-qualification, then three additional years of highly relevant employment are required.

If the qualification is not in a highly relevant field, two years of employment at an appropriate skill level, completed in the last five years which is highly relevant to the nominated occupation is required. This is reduced to one year if there is an additional qualification at least at AQF Certificate IV level in a highly relevant field.

A positive assessment of both qualifications and employment is required for a positive Skills Assessment Outcome.

Qualification

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the education level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma or higher and in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.

Indigenous Health Primary Care Practice is the study of the knowledge and skills for primary health care practice in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The level of employment associated with this qualification is autonomous work under the broad guidance of others, in primary health care practice in program delivery, management, policy or education functions.

Employment Criteria

Highly relevant tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • Provides input to the planning, development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all health programs in the community
  • May perform a management role, providing staff counselling, facilitation, orientation, induction and development
  • May carry out administrative duties including budgeting and correspondence
  • May liaise with government and non-government agencies
  • Treats diseases or injuries
  • Takes part in case management and follow-up, independently or with other health care providers

Additional tasks may include: 

  • Maintaining health records and statistics
  • Acting as an advocate in the community they serve, and as a communicator and interpreter on behalf of clients and other health workers
  • Providing clinical functions, such as case management and follow-up, independently or in consultation with other health care providers
  • Providing health education to individual clients and staff in health facilities
  • Providing cultural education to persons outside the cultural community and life skills education to the community they serve
  • Providing counselling and referring clients to other health care providers where necessary
