Audiologist is a VETASSESS Group A occupation
This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher, in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.
The information below describes the available pathways for a Skills Assessment under Group A. Please note that in order to achieve a successful Skills Assessment Outcome, a positive assessment for both qualifications and employment is required.
Pathway 1
This pathway requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the education level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher degree and in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.
Bachelor degree or higher degree includes AQF Master Degree or AQF Doctoral Degree.
In addition, it is essential for applicants to meet the following employment criteria:
- at least one year of post-qualification employment at an appropriate skill level, undertaken in the last five years,
- working 20 hours or more per week, and
- highly relevant to the nominated occupation.
Qualification and Employment Criteria
Highly relevant tasks include:
- Assessing and diagnosing the extent of client hearing loss using a wide range of techniques, including audiometric tests;
- Reporting results of assessments and tests in writing and making referrals to medical practitioners;
- Recommending solutions to those with hearing impairment including amplification, implantable devices, medical interventions and assistive listening devices and providing aural rehabilitation programs;
- Providing counselling, advice and information to clients and families as a part of overall treatment;
- Assisting with the development and management of noise control and hearing conservation strategies.
In Australia’s primary health care system, Audiologists are the primary health practitioners for people with hearing loss and related disorders. They work with clients of all ages – from infants to older adults – and clients with complex needs. Audiologists are qualified to assess hearing and auditory function, vestibular (balance) function, tinnitus, auditory processing function, and neural function. Audiologists can do this by performing diagnostic tests, including advanced tests using electrophysiological methods.
Audiometrist is a separate occupation classified under ANZSCO code 311299 Medical Technicians nec and is not considered suitable for the occupation of Audiologist.
