Cartographer is a VETASSESS Group A occupation.
This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher, in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.
Applicants must also have at least one year of highly relevant, post-qualification employment, at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years.
*Highly relevant paid employment duration (20 hours or more per week):
One year of post-qualification paid employment (20 hours or more per week) highly relevant to the nominated occupation, at an appropriate skill level in the last five years before the date of application for a Skills Assessment.

Employment Criteria
Highly relevant tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Evaluating, compiling and maintaining spatial information using a range of digital and graphical source materials, including aerial photographs, satellite imagery, survey documents, existing maps and records, historical data, reports and statistics
- Analysing and interpreting data to design maps, graphs, plans, drawings and three-dimensional models using geographic information and related systems
- Advising Architects, Engineering Professionals, environmental and other scientists or other relevant professionals on the technical requirements of mapping
Additional tasks may include:
- Designs and compiles map manuscripts using digital and graphical source material, including aerial photographs, satellite imagery, survey documents, existing maps and records, reports and statistics
- Advises surveyors and other professionals on the data requirements for map production and on the aesthetic, technical and economic considerations of scales, details to be illustrated, place names and reproduction techniques
- Supervises and coordinates the work of cartographic associates in the production and reproduction of maps
- May produce digital elevation models
- May specialise in cadastral (land tenure) or topographical mapping, or maps for specific purposes such as town planning, geology and hydrography
- May produce digital elevation models
