Emergency Services Worker is a VETASSESS Group D occupation.

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Certificate III or higher. Applicants can fulfil the assessment criteria for this occupation in one of four ways.

Group D - October 25

* Highly relevant paid employment duration (20 hours or more per week) 

Pathways 1–3 

minimum years of post-qualification employment highly relevant to the nominated occupation, completed at an appropriate skill level in the five years before the date of application for a Skills Assessment. 

Pathway 4 

minimum 4 years of relevant employment required – Three years of relevant employment (can be outside the last 5-year period) in addition to at least one year of highly relevant employment within the last five years before applying. 

A positive assessment of both qualification level and employment duration is required for a positive Skills Assessment outcome.

Qualification

Highly relevant major fields of study include: 

  • Emergency Service Delivery Operations
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response Systems
  • Accident-Emergency Procedures
  • Accident Rescue for Emergency Service Personnel
  • Emergency Risk Assessment and Management
  • Public Safety (Community Safety)

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the education level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Certificate III or higher and in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.

Employment Criteria

Tasks may include but are not limited to: 

  • Attending the scene of fires and other emergencies reported to authorities
  • Rescuing and evacuating people stranded or trapped in dangerous situations
  • Administering first aid
  • Attending and participating in training activities, rescue classes, drills, demonstrations and courses in emergency techniques
  • Training recruits in emergency procedures and practices

Additional tasks may include 

  • Minimising risk by dousing fires or taking other steps as needed
  • Participating in in-service events and drills to hone rescue and reaction skills
  • Providing first aid to those at the emergency
  • Rescuing, freeing, or evacuating those trapped in dangerous conditions
  • Rushing to scenes of fire and other emergencies
  • Studying building maps and plans to become familiar with access points and escape routes
