Illustrators create and develop illustrations and designs for books, magazines, advertisements, films and multimedia. They illustrate on paper as well as in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) models and may use traditional drawing methods, computertechniques or a combination of both. Illustrators need to be good communicators who understand what their clients need in order to fulfil their briefs. Many Illustrators display their work in a professional portfolio (either digital or physical) and when prompted, should be able talk about each sample of their work.

Illustrator is a VETASSESS Group B Occupation

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher degree, in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation. In addition to this, applicants must have undertaken at least one year of post-qualification employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years which is highly relevant to the nominated occupation. If employment is not post-qualification, then five additional years of highly relevant employment are required.

If the degree is not in a highly relevant field, three years of employment at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years in a field which is highly relevant to the nominated occupation is required. This is reduced to two years if there is an additional qualification at least at AQF Diploma level in a highly relevant field.

If employment is not post-qualification, then five additional years of relevant employment are required. This is in addition to one year of highly relevant employment within the past five years.

Please note, a portfolio of completed work must be submitted for assessment if nominating this occupation.

A positive assessment of both qualifications and employment is required for a positive Skills Assessment Outcome.

Qualification and Employment Criteria

AQF Bachelor degree or higher*

Note: Qualifications in the various Design disciplines may be considered on a case-bycase basis if the study program consists of subjects in drawing or illustration and design; and the subsequent employment is highly relevant. For example, qualifications in Architecture is relevant to employment of an Architectural Illustrator. 

Highly relevant major fields of study include:

  • Illustration
  • Visual Art / Visual Communication
  • Graphic / Multimedia Design
  • Fine Art

Tasks include:

  • Examines assignment brief and related material, and prepares layouts and sketches of proposed illustrations.
  • Determines style, technique and medium to produce the desired effects and conform with reproduction requirements.
  • Conceives and renders illustrations and details from models, sketches or imagination.
  • Uses pens, ink, charcoal, crayons, paint and other materials to create drawings and illustrations.
  • Discusses and amends illustrations with clients and production team at various stages of completion.
  • Uses computers to develop and enhance illustrations.
  • Illustrates children's books, scientific work, technical manuals, reference books and other publications.
  • May specialize in product packaging, corporate, medical or architectural illustration.
  • May prepare series of drawings to illustrate an animated sequence in a television or film production.
  • Researches the topic by looking at photographs, artworks, advertisements and books, and by observing people, animals and plants.
  • Creates and manipulates models using clay and other materials or 2D and 3D computer graphics to create an animated sequence.
