Intensive Care Ambulance Paramedic is a VETASSESS Group A occupation

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher, in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.

Applicants must also have at least one year of highly relevant, post-qualification employment, at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years.

A positive assessment of both qualifications and employment is required for a positive Skills Assessment Outcome.

* Additional qualifications in a highly relevant field of study include those comparable to the following levels: 

  • AQF Diploma 
  • AQF Advanced Diploma 
  • AQF Associate Degree or 
  • AQF Graduate Diploma

** Highly relevant paid employment duration (20 hours or more per week): 

One year of post-qualification paid employment (20 hours or more per week) highly relevant to the nominated occupation, at an appropriate skill level in the last five years before the date of application for a Skills Assessment

Intensive Care Paramedical Studies (Ambulance) is a program of study that prepares workers employed by Ambulance Authorities to provide advanced emergency care and transport services to the sick and injured prior to and during transfer to a hospital or medical facility. 

Employment Criteria

Highly relevant tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • Attending accidents, emergencies and requests for medical assistance
  • Assessing health of patients, determining need for assistance, and assessing specialised needs and factors affecting patients' conditions
  • Performing therapies and administering drugs according to protocol
  • Resuscitating and defibrillating patients and operating life-support equipment
  • Transporting accident victims to medical facilities
  • Transporting sick and disabled persons to and from medical facilities for specialised treatment and rehabilitation
  • Instructing community groups and essential service workers in first aid
  • Attending public gatherings and sporting events where accidents and other health emergencies may occur
  • Ensuring that ambulances are adequately maintained and stocked with medical supplies, and that equipment is in good working order
  • Preparing written reports on the state of patients' injuries and treatment provided

Additional tasks may include: 

  • Attends accidents, emergencies and requests for medical assistance
  • Assesses specialised needs and factors affecting patient's condition
  • Performs therapies and administers drugs according to protocol
  • Transports accident victims to medical facilities
  • Transports sick and disabled persons to and from centres of specialised treatment or rehabilitation
  • Instructs community groups and essential service workers in first aid
  • Attends public gatherings and sporting events where accidents and other health emergencies may occur
  • Performs daily vehicle and equipment check making sure that medical supplies, including drugs, are accounted for and that equipment and ambulances are in good working order
  • Assessing health of patients, determining need for assistance, and assessing specialised needs and factors affecting patients' conditions
  • Ensuring that ambulances are adequately maintained and stocked with medical supplies, and that equipment is in good working order
  • Preparing written reports on the state of patients' injuries and treatment
  • Attending accidents, emergencies and requests for medical assistance and assessing specialised needs and factors affecting patients' conditions
  • Resuscitating and defibrillating patients and operating life-support equipment
  • Instructing community groups and essential service workers in first aid at public gatherings and sporting events where accidents and other health emergencies may occur
