Mixed Livestock Farmer is a VETASSESS Group B occupation

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher.

Applicants can fulfil the assessment criteria for this occupation in four different ways.

Group B

*Additional qualifications in a highly relevant field of study include those comparable to the following levels: 

  • AQF Diploma 
  • AQF Advanced Diploma 
  • AQF Associate Degree or 
  • AWF Graduate Diploma 

***Bachelor degree or higher degree includes: 

  • AQF Master Degree or 
  • AQF Doctoral Degree 

*Highly relevant paid employment duration (20 hours or more per week)

minimum years of employment highly relevant to the nominated occupation, completed at an appropriate skill level in the five years before the date of application for a Skills Assessment. 

minimum 6 years of relevant employment required - five years of relevant employment (can be outside the last five-year period) in addition to at least one year of highly relevant employment within the last five years before applying. 

Qualification & Employment Criteria

Qualification

Highly relevant major fields of study include: 

  • Agriculture

On a case-by-case basis:

  • Biological Sciences - if subjects relating to farm animals or livestock
  • Veterinary Sciences - if subjects relating to farm animals, diseases etc.
  • Environmental science - if sustainable farming methods included

 

Employment Criteria

Tasks may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Breed and raise livestock for the production of meat, wool, skins, milk, eggs and honey
  • Monitor and maintain the health of stock, providing pasture and fodder to maintain appropriate nutrition levels
  • Move or rotate stock to optimise feeding opportunities
  • Organise and conduct farming operations such as catching and loading livestock, shearing, milking and sterilising machines
  • Direct and oversee general farming activities such as fertilising, pest and weed control
  • Manage business capital, maintain and evaluate records of farming activities, monitor market activity and plan production accordingly
  • Organise the grading, sale, purchase and transportation of produce
  • Inspect and maintain farm buildings, fences, equipment and water supply systems
  • Recruit and coordinate farm workers and direct them on crop growing and livestock raising
  • Plan activities to minimise environmental degradation, monitor environmental effects of farming activities and repair existing damage through programs such as tree planting.
