Photographer is a VETASSESS Group C occupation

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma or higher.

Applicants can fulfil the assessment criteria for this occupation in four different ways.

*If employment is prior to the completion of the qualification at the required level, an applicant must have at least one year of highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level within the last five years. The remaining three years of pre-qualifying period may be within the last ten years.

A positive assessment of both qualification level and employment duration is required for a positive Skills Assessment outcome.

Group C

* Additional qualifications in a highly relevant field of study include those comparable to the following levels:

  • AQF Diploma
  • AQF Advanced Diploma
  • AQF Associate Degree or
  • AQF Graduate Diploma

** Highly relevant paid employment duration (20 hours or more per week)

Employment

Highly relevant tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Consulting with clients to determine objectives of photographic assignments.
  • Studying requirements of assignment and selecting type of camera, film, filter and lighting.
  • Working from a studio, and transporting and setting up equipment at assigned locations.
  • Measuring light levels and determining exposure.
  • Adjusting camera angles, aperture settings and subjects to achieve desired composition.
  • Adjusting lighting and filters to accentuate highlights and colours.
  • Mixing photographic chemicals, processing film and developing prints.
  • Manipulating images using digital imaging techniques and creative darkroom techniques such as adjusting exposure and development times.
  • May make enlarged prints, and mount and frame prints.

Employment information

Photographers operate cameras and lighting equipment to take photographs of people, places, products and other subjects. Areas of specialization in photography may include, but are not limited to, photojournalism, fashion, food, scientific, commercial, industrial, medical, portrait, wedding, advertising, landscape, art and architectural photography.

Photographers may be employees, for example of a newspaper or magazine. They may also be self-employed or freelancers and receive work on commission from advertising agencies, graphic design studios, and retail, manufacturing and service companies, or may be contracted to cover a particular planned event such as a wedding or graduation.

For skills assessment purposes, full-time work is paid employment performed for a minimum of 20 hours per week. Irregular periods that average out to 20 hours per week over a year will not be considered. For example, if you have worked in your nominated occupation for 12 hours per week over a three-month period, and have then worked 40 hours per week over a seven month period, only the seven-month period would be considered for skills assessment purposes.

Supporting Material for Assessment

When applying for a Skills Assessment, please ensure you submit sufficient evidence supporting proof of your identity, qualification and employment claims. A full list of the documents required can be found on the VETASSESS website under Eligibility Criteria.

If you are nominating this occupation and you are self employed, you are required to provide the following:

  • Evidence of self-employment such as sole trading or business registration details and/or official statements issued by your (registered) Accountant and/or legal team. The statement from your Accountant or Solicitor must include the Accountant’s or Solicitor’s letterhead, your full name, how long you have been continuously self-employed including official dates in each role, the nature of the business conducted, the signature and contact details of the Accountant or Solicitor.
  • A statutory declaration listing your main duties during self-employment.
  • Payment evidence showing regular income from self-employment, such as client invoices together with corresponding bank statements and/or official taxation records.
  • Supplementary evidence, such as contracts with clients or suppliers, client testimonials, evidence of projects completed, etc.

Please note, a portfolio of completed work must be submitted for assessment if nominating this occupation.
