Safety Inspector is a VETASSESS Group C occupation

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma or higher.

Applicants must have fulfilled at least one of the following four criteria (1-4):

* Additional qualifications in a highly relevant field of study include those comparable to the following levels:  

  • AQF Diploma  
  • AQF Advanced Diploma   
  • AQF Associate Degree or  
  • AQF Graduate Diploma

** Highly relevant paid employment duration  (20 hours or more per week)

minimum years of employment highly relevant to the nominated   occupation, completed at an appropriate skill level in the five years   before the date of application for a Skills Assessment. 

minimum 4 years of relevant employment required – three years   of relevant employment (can be outside the last 5-year period) in   addition to at least one year of highly relevant employment within   the last  five years before applying.

Consideration can be made on a case-by-case basis for the qualification major to be relevant if it is related to the subsequent employment context and if the employment assessment is considered highly relevant and assessed positively.

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the education level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma or higher and in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.

Employment Criteria

Highly relevant tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • Examining equipment specifications, and inspecting and testing machines, equipment and clothing to ensure compliance with safety standards and serviceability
  • Inspecting factories and other work sites to ensure compliance with government and industry standards and regulations
  • Observing workers to ensure protective devices are being utilised according to regulations and that combustible and other hazardous materials are used and stored in accordance with approved procedures
  • Conducting tests in work areas to detect toxic fumes, explosive gas-air mixtures and other work hazards
  • Ensuring fire prevention equipment and other safety supplies, such as first aid kits, stretchers and blankets, conform to standards
  • Assisting in conducting safety meetings and campaigns, and organising training in general safety principles in keeping with regulations
  • Advising organisations on ways to comply with occupational health and safety legislative requirements
  • Investigating incidents and fatalities, to determine causes and to collect evidence of non-compliance with occupational health and safety legislation
     

Additional tasks may include:

  • Inspects public places and working conditions, investigates accidents, studies causes and recommends action
  • Inspects insured buildings, vehicles and commercial and industrial establishments to evaluate conditions and practices affecting insurance risk and to develop safety programs
  • May report unsafe conditions and careless actions of workers
