In this blog, our VETASSESS assessors in trade occupations answer questions from one of our recent Skills Assessment webinars. They provide explanations and tips about technical assessments, videos and other evidence requirements.
Can the technical interview for Pathway 1 non-licensed trade applicants be done over the internet, so the applicant does not need to be in Australia or a designated place?
This will depend on where the applicant is located, as not all countries have a reliable internet connection. We have assessment centres around the world and you can find them on our website here.
I failed my technical interview, can I apply to have another interview?
Yes, you can apply for reassessment within 12 months of the unsuccessful outcome. When requesting a reassessment, you will need to provide evidence of any additional training or employment completed to enhance your skills. You must supply new evidence for your reassessment application to be accepted. Find out more on our website here.
Can the videos that need to be submitted be more than five minutes?
You will not be able to upload videos longer than five minutes due to the limit on the file size – each video must not exceed 500MB.
For video evidence, will you consider video links to a YouTube channel where the client has shared their work?
We are required to store a video file to meet Government compliance requirements, so we do need you to upload your video to us.
If a tradie is working as a subcontractor, but only for one employer, should they be declared as self-employed or as if they are an employee? If they are recorded as an employee, what payment evidence can they supply besides their invoices matched with the bank statement?
The financial evidence available would depend on whether you operate through your ABN (Australian Business Number) or registered company. The company you are subcontracting to can explain the arrangement in your reference letter. You can find a list of documents required for self-employment completed in Australia and overseas here.
In India, most tradespeople receive payment in cash, but they do have tax returns. Will these be considered as financial evidence?
Income tax returns are one form of acceptable evidence, but you will need a second form of financial evidence, such as bank statements or salary certificates.
You can read more about evidence requirements for trade occupations on our website here.
