New pilot leads the way in AI-enabled Recognition of Prior Learning

A new artificial intelligence (AI) pilot is underway to transform how skilled workers gain formal qualifications - making the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process faster and more consistent.

RPL Project - Assessor - Carl Ludeman with Jenny Roche

Led by VETASSESS, a key division of Bendigo Kangan Institute, the project is being delivered in collaboration with the Victorian Government and TAFE network.

The goal: to get more skilled workers into jobs sooner, improve pathways for upskilling and retraining, and help address skills shortages across key industries.

Streamlining a complex process with technology

RPL recognisies the skills and knowledge individuals have gained through formal and informal learning, matching them to formal qualifications that open doors to new career and training opportunities.

This pilot explores the use of AI tools - including document intelligence and an RPL engine - to streamline the process by automatically interpretating and matching a person's learning evidence to relevant units of competency.

The project aims to:

  • Enable quicker, more consistent outcomes for learners, assessors and employers.
  • Support assessors through the use of AI tools, not replace them. While AI handles time-consuming data tasks, final competency judgments remain with humans to ensure accuracy and integrity.

The AI pilot project is being shaped and tested in collaboration with TAFE Gippsland and Chisholm Institute, ensuring it reflects the real-world needs of learners, assessors and training providers across Victoria.

Backed by $3 million in Victoria Government funding, this initiative reflects a strong commitment to innovation in skills recognition and the future of workforce development.
