This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher.

Applicants can fulfil the assessment criteria for this occupation in four different ways.

*If employment is prior to the completion of the qualification at the required level, an applicant must have at least one year of highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level within the last five years. The remaining five years of pre-qualifying period may be within the last ten years.

A positive assessment of both qualification level and employment duration is required for a positive Skills Assessment outcome.

Qualification and Employment Criteria

AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree*

This occupation requires studies in Cinematography, Radio and Television Studies, or Drama/Theatre Arts. In some cases, a specialization in Direction may have been completed.

* This includes qualifications assessed at AQF Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level.

 

Highly relevant major fields of study include:

  • Film/Video/Media production or Cinematography (the study of communicating dramatic information, ideas, moods, and feelings through the making and producing of films and videos);
  • Broadcasting/Film and Television (the study of theories, methods, and techniques used to plan, produce, and distribute audio and video programs and messages);
  • Drama/Theatre Arts (the study of dramatic works and their performance);
  • Film Editing (the study of selecting, editing, assembly, reassembly and connection of film sequences of the best technical quality and acting to create a coherent finished motion picture which best realises the film concept and story);
  • Digital Media/Digital Arts;
  • Multimedia Design.

Employment

Highly relevant tasks include:

  • Overseeing creative aspects of film, television, radio or stage productions;
  • Conferring with other specialists to assess requirements for production – script development, set locations, stage directions, costumes, choreography, sound and lighting effects and filming techniques;
  • Consulting with a Media Producer about aims of production content and detail and commercial considerations;
  • Studying scripts to determine artistic interpretation and articulating desired interpretation and meaning to cast;
  • Scheduling and directing rehearsals;
  • Supervising editing and final mix;
  • Coordinating the activities of production and technical staff.

They direct the making of a film, television, radio or stage production by visualizing the script while guiding and bringing out the best performance from the actors and technical crew to capture the vision for the production. Directors have overall responsibility for production filming, recording, or performance.
