A new path for electricians with foreign qualifications to work in Victoria

Migrants who have gained an electrical qualification in their home country can now earn an Australian qualification that will help them gain a licence to work as an electrician in Victoria.

VETASSESS has worked with Energy Safe Victoria to design the Australian Technical Competencies Statement (ATCS) assessment that will enable people who have trained as electricians overseas to qualify as an electrician in Victoria.

ATCS assessment is open to Australian citizens and permanent residents and is an assessment of their qualification and/or employment experience obtained outside Australia.

An ATCS assessment will prove the candidate has been assessed as partially competent against the units in the Australian qualification UEE30811 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician, which will entitle them to a Supervised Worker’s licence in Victoria.

Candidates will then need to take Minimum Australian Context Gap training and a period of supervised employment to become eligible for award of the full qualification.

VETASSESS Executive Director Rob Thomason says the ATCS will help people who have trained and worked as electricians overseas to obtain an electrical licence in Victoria.

“There is strong demand for electricians in Victoria. Sometimes people have migrated with a spouse or for study and want to work in their trade now they are settled into life in Australia,” he said.

“This assessment gives them a pathway to the trade without having to undertake an apprenticeship or start training as a new entrant.”

How to apply

To be eligible to apply, you must meet the following requirements and have official evidence to show that:

  • You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • You have completed formal training as an electrician overseas and have at least 4 years full-time (or equivalent part-time) employment experience as an electrician, 12 months of which were completed within the past 3 years, OR
  • You have completed at least 6 years full-time (or equivalent part-time) employment experience as an electrician, 12 months of which were completed within the past 3 years.
